I get it, this is the slogan of a popular fats-food chain. However, this is sage-like advice. An approach that avoids processed food, including bread/tortillas/etc., can eliminate a common food insensitivity.
Food insensitivities are more common than you might think. Processed grain products are can drive autoimmune issues that can present as a variety of symptoms (Lerner et al 2015).
The damage that can be caused by autoimmune issues can be amplified by metabolic dysfunction. The free carbohydrate and additives in processed grain products is quickly taken up by the blood and overwhelm the liver.
Since I air on the side of a keto approach, these foods are not generally in my diet. I do like a good taco with a corn shell; however, I have become very picky of the quality.
The best strategy for processed grain products is to mostly avoid and only enjoy when the quality is high. An easy alternative is doing lettuce wraps.
Check out a client inspired recipe for a Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato wrap!
BLT (Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato) Lettuce Wrap
1. Romain Lettuce (Full leaves)
2. Bacon (1 pound)
4. Fresh Avocado (2 whole)
5. Onion (1/2 cup)
6. Jalapeños (2-3 chopped)
7. Goat Cheese
8. Vinaigrette (Recipe included)
Step # 1: (Vinaigrette Recipe) Chop fresh garlic (1 clove) place in sealable bottle with a few sticks of fresh thyme. For the volume of the bottle, use about a 3:1 ratio olive oil to white wine vinegar. Add a pinch of salt, seal, and shake vigorously before using.
(Aging the vinaigrette is a good practice. Leave on counter and continue to use, it gets better with age!)
Step # 2: Cook bacon to desired texture. Chop the onion, tomato, avocado, and jalapenos. Depending on goat cheese, prepare as necessary (I use a crumble here). Create a buffet to give variety.
Step # 3: Build the wrap how you like it, add vinaigrette, and enjoy!!!
